Deciduous forests, also known as broad-leaf forests are temperate forests with variations, whose trees shed their leaves each year. They are usually situated in areas of moist summers and cool winters. The soil is mostly rich and leaves continuously dropped from trees provide organic content easily. Leaves are arranged in strata’s- understory, shrubs, canopy, and ground; hence light is filtered out before reaching the ground. There are two types of Deciduous forests:

Dry deciduous forest

These forests are generally formed in regions that have rainfall between 70 to 100 cms. These forests mostly occupy the north India and southern region of the Deccan plateau and are also found in the plains of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

Moist deciduous forest

These types of forests are found in the regions that receive annual rainfall of 100-200 cms. Trees drop their leaves during the spring and early summer and these forests occupy a much larger area than the evergreen forests. These are found in the hills of eastern Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
