Difference between WiFi and MiFi

1. Wireless Fidelity (WiFi):

WiFi stands for Wireless Fidelity. It is a trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance, and refers to a wireless networking standard based on IEEE 802.11. It connects multiple devices via Wireless Local Area Networking (WLAN). WiFi provides internet connectivity to next-generation wireless devices through fixed WiFi hotspots and it creates a WLAN using a router connected to a respective Internet Service Provider (ISP)

In simple WiFi is a wireless networking standard that is used by smart devices for wireless communication without requiring cable. Any device which is WiFi compatible then it can go for wireless interaction with other WiFi-compatible devices.

For example, our smartphone or Laptop has a WiFi chip inside it which allows us to connect it to a wireless hotspot

2. Mobile WiFi (MiFi):

MiFi stands for Mobile WiFi some people also term it My WiFi. On the other hand, it is an internet device that provides connectivity when devices are on the move. It can be called a modem or even a router. MiFi doesn’t just support only the WiFi standard. They also support mobile data technologies such as 3G or 4G LTE  and pick mobile data from respective telecom providers depending upon the sim inserted into it.

MyFi is used to create an Ad-hoc Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) network wherever we move. MiFi has often built-in WiFi with them. MiFi comprises two main parts i.e a modem, and a WiFi router. The WiFi router provides WiFi connectivity and the modem provides connectivity to next-generation wireless devices based on wireless standards such as 3G or 4G LTE.

For example, Verizon Inseego Jetpack MiFi 8800L is the best choice of MiFi for most people because of its broad coverage, fast performance, and better battery life.

Difference between WiFi and MiFi :

S.No. WiFi MiFi
01. WiFi is a wireless network standard. MiFi is an actual internet device.
02. WiFi is a wireless standard or WLAN technology and uses2.4 GHz and 5GHz frequency radio signals to establish a connection. Along with WiFi connectivity, MiFi devices can support mobile data technologies like 3G, and 4G LTE.
03. WiFi provides internet connectivity through fixed Wifi hotspots and it fails to provide connectivity during movement. Whereas MiFi can provide connectivity when devices are on the move.
04. It is used to create WiFi hotspots. It is used to create mobile hotspots.
05. WiFi devices do not support mobile connectivity. MiFi devices support mobile connectivity.
06. It comprises only router functionalities. It comprises both router and modem functionalities.
07. WiFi does not support cellular connectivity. It only support WiFi connectivity. MiFi supports cellular connectivity along with WLAN connectivity.
08. In simple WiFi is fixed to a single spot. Whereas MiFi is a WiFi device that we can bring with us wherever we go.
09. WiFi is fast compared to MiFi. MiFi is less fast than WiFi.
10. For establishing the WiFi network, WiFi routers must be connected to a broadband connection and a power outlet.  An internal SIM card in a MiFi device provides internet data, and the device is battery-powered.
11. If you utilize your WiFi network mostly from a single location (home or workplace) and want a robust connection with larger data caps, get a WiFi device. Consider purchasing a MiFi if you are an on-the-go worker and require access to a robust and reliable mobile hotspot without draining your phone’s battery,
12. Wi-Fi signal boosters strengthen and widen broadband Internet signals so they can transport data more quickly and cover more ground in areas with poor WiFi connections. Mi-Fi signal boosters are used in all in-building and in-vehicle cellular signal boosters. They boost the mobile signals that a hotspot or MiFi device may send out.
