Skype is a telecommunication application that provides video calls and voice calls between mobile phones. computers and other devices. It requires an internet facility for providing any of its services. It is also used for messaging that can contain text, image, audio, or video. It allows connecting several people at a time in video conferencing calls. Skype Technologies has launched in 2003. It is currently owned by Microsoft Incorporation. It is one of the most used applications for video chatting. Facebook Messenger is an American messaging app and platform developed by Facebook. It allows users to send messages, exchange photos, videos, stickers, audio, and files, react to other users’ messages and interact with bots, and support voice and video calling. 

The difference between Skype and Facebook Messenger are as follows: 

Skype Facebook Messenger
It is owned by Microsoft Incorporation. It is also owned by Facebook, Inc.
It was launched in August 2003. It was launched on 9th Aug 2011.
In Skype, you have to add or accept contacts before messaging. It prevents strangers from sending you unwanted messages. In Facebook Messenger, anyone can message you.
Skype allows us to share documents. Facebook Messenger does not allow to sharing of documents.
In Skype, you can see when a person was last active. There is no such option in Facebook Messenger.
Skype allows you to share music files. Facebook Messenger does not allow this.
Skype does not allow to the personalization of the app like choosing a different theme or colors. Facebook Messenger allows to personalize the appearance of the app by choosing a different theme or colors.
In Skype, you cannot share your location. In Facebook Messenger, you can share your location.
In Skype there is no media library that contains all uploaded files. In Facebook Messenger there is a media library that contains all uploaded files, making the search easier and helping you organize the content.
In Skype, there is no Facebook sign-in option. In Facebook Messenger, there is a Facebook sign-in option.
Skype does not support widgets. Facebook Messenger supports widgets.
Skype has the facility to specify your current availability i.e. busy or away etc. Facebook Messenger lacks this feature.
Skype has an inbuilt translator for communicating in different languages. Facebook Messenger does not have a built-in translator.
