Maternal defines the things that are related to the mother. The paternal represents something that is related to the father. The maternal and paternal can be biologically related to them and it can not be only biological, it can be about their feeling, emotions, and other more related behavior can be called maternal and paternal things. 

More other common words are maternal/paternal care or maternal/paternal heritage. In these cases, they are actually used in their relationships only. When applied to the family title like grandmother/grandfather, the person belonging to their mother’s/fathers’ parent. 

What is Maternal?

The actual word maternal is derived from the Latin word “Maternus” which means “of Mother”. Maternal are things that belong to the mother things or that belong to the grandmother. Maternal refers to the feelings, actions, behavior, and caring characteristics toward their child. 

Many characteristics can be called maternal characteristics including the nature of caring and loving toward their child. Physical traits (mitochondrial gene always passes from one generation to next by maternal only), Colour of eyes, recessive genetic disease (hemophilia, X-bar bodies), and emotional traits of having a baby refer to women’s natural instincts. Caring for others in a nurturing manner is also a maternal characteristic. Maternal is loving from your mother’s and also from your grandmother’s side.

What is Paternal?

Paternal refers to feelings and actions toward the father’s side directly related to the paternal. It can be a grandfather. The word paternal is derived from the Latin word “Paternus” which means a father. The paternal character decides the generation and generation of a family tree. Genetic characteristics that transfer from generation to generation that decides the male and female progeny by the transfer of their gene X and Y chromosome are the paternal characteristics.

As per biological references, paternal means a child’s father. This is a biological relationship between a child and their father that is being used in the drawing family tree to identify their cousins, relatives, their mother and father side persons, and it is easy to identify the genetic disease that is being transferred from one generation to next generation either from the paternal side or from the maternal side.

Relationships

Relationship with mothers is related to their child even before birth Relationships. Nine months of investing from before birth are a reward that relates to the child.  Father and child relationship starts from the development of the child. Fathers can be more loving and more affectionate to their child love and can be a man who is devoted to their children and can not develop a stronger bond with them.

Genetics

In genetic differences, the mother can transfer cytoplasmic and mitochondrial to the child.  In the paternal, the mitochondrial and cytoplasmic genes can not be transferred to the child.

Chromosome

In maternal characters there is only X, the X chromosome can not determine the baby’s characteristics ( Male/Female). In paternal, there are two chromosomes of X and Y that can determine the child’s character (Male/Female).

Gender

Maternal refers to the female gender. Paternal refers to the male gender.

Differences in their meaning

The word maternal means things related to the mother. The word Paternal means thing related to the father.

Terminologies

The word maternal shows feminine hierarchy. The word paternal shows the male hierarchy.

From the genetic perspective, the birth of a child includes the genes of both the mother and father. The child can look like his father or mother, but it has other genetic differences. Children always require a courageous father that can support them in strong mental development, mothers support is always needed by a child to share their feeling, depression, and anxiety, and seeks always emotional support. Studies have shown that child mental and physical development (In all types of development) always needed their mother’s and father’s emotional and physical support.
