The basic difference between the glottis and epiglottis is, the glottis opens the windpipe between the larynx, and it also determines the voice type, it is also known as the RIMA glottis present between the larynx. Epiglottis is present in the superior of the glottis during the opening of the windpipe, and it does not play any role in the production of the voice. Glottis and Epiglottis both are charged organs and play role in the intake of food and voice production.

What is Glottis?

Glottis is known as RIMA glottis plays an essential role in respiration i.e., especially in force respiration it changes its shape according to the force applied to it and can become a narrow and wide triangular shape depending on the condition that it required, because of this nature they plays important role in food intake also. Glottis is present on the larynx because they play role in voice & types of voice production, they are also known as the charged organs.

What is Epiglottis?

Epiglottis is present on the larynx and during the intake of food, it prevents food from entering the larynx, it has special features like its shape looks like a leaf structure, made up of fibrocartilage, also known as a cartilaginous flap. Epiglottis attaches at the dorsal side of the thyroid cartilage in an upright manner during breathing.

Similarities Between Glottis and Epiglottis

  • Glottis and Epiglottis both are anatomical organs.
  • Both occur on the larynx.
  • Epiglottis and Glotiss both have an important role in sound production.
  • Both are charged organs.

Differences Between Glottis and Epiglottis

Glottis

Epiglottis

Shape Depending on the respiration condition can be triangular or flat. Its shape determines by the glottis, present on the glottis.
Voice type Glottis determines voice type. It is charged to help in voice production but does not have any role in its type.
Location Glottis presents below the epiglottis. It presents above the glottis and covers the larynx.
Significance The main role in voice production. Its main role is preventing food from entering the larynx.
Movement Every time of breath glottis moves upward direction. Epiglottis always moves in a downward direction.
During Swallowing Glottis moves in an upward direction. Epiglottis moves downward direction.

Conclusion:

Glotiss and Epiglotiss are anatomical organs, both plays important role in covering the larynx and production of sound. They cover the larynx to prevent the food to enter it. During swallowing and sound production, the glottis always moves in an upward direction instead of in a downward direction. Glottis have characteristics to change their shape according to the force applied to them that’s why it produces different types of voice. Epiglottis covers the glottis and helps in voice production and maintains the anatomical shape of the glottis.
