1. DVD-R :
The full form of DVD-R is Digital Versatile Disc Recordable. It is a circular disc having 120 mm diameter and 1.3 mm thickness. It also has two poly-carbonate substrates of 0.6 mm each. It is supported by most DVD players. It is approved by the DVD Forum founded by collaboration of different international firms. The DVD-R was founded by Pioneer. It was released in 1997. It is used to record data. DVD-R can be written only once. data is written with the help of laser on it.

2. DVD-RW :
The full form of DVD-RW is Digital Versatile Disc Re-Writable. It is a circular disc having 120 mm diameter and 1.3 mm thickness. It also has two poly-carbonate substrates of 0.6 mm each. It is different from DVD-R as it can be erased and written again and again. The data is stored here in digital form. It is a optical storage device. Any kind of digital data such as video, audio, images or multimedia programs can be stored in it. It is widely used to install the operating systems in personal computers.

Data loss may occur due to reflective properties of dye. Dye is not used here hence data loss is not possible.
It is economical. It is more costlier than DVD-R.
