The use of delimiters soon becomes important when dealing with anything but the most trivial equations. Without them, formulas can become ambiguous. Also, special types of mathematical structures, such as matrices, typically rely on delimiters to enclose them.
Some delimiters along with their LaTeX codes :
TERM SYMBOL LATEX
Round left parenthesis ( (
Round right parenthesis ) )
Square left parenthesis [ [
Square right parenthesis ] ]
Curly right braces \} \}
Curly left braces \{ \{
Vertical line \vert \vert
Double vertical line \| \|
Backslash \backslash \backslash
Left angle \langle \langle
Right angle \rangle \rangle
Ceiling of x \lceil x \rceil \lceil x \rceil
Floor of x \lfloor x \rfloor \lfloor x \rfloor
Upper corner of x \ulcorner x \urcorner \ulcorner x \urcorner
Many times the mathematical features differ in size, in which case the delimiters surrounding the expression should vary accordingly. This can be done automatically using the \left, \right, and \middle commands along with the delimiters. For example : \left\{
