Pressure is the perpendicular force applied per unit area of a surface. It has SI unit Pascal (Pressure is said to be 1 Pascal if a force of 1 Newton is applied on an area of 1m2). The formula for pressure is given as the force per unit area. It can be represented as a formula in the form of, P = F / A. Where P is pressure, F is the force acting perpendicular to the surface and A is the surface area on which force is applied. Let’s learn about the conversion of one form of pressure into another,
PSI to kg/cm2 Conversion
PSI is one of the various units used to describe pressure. PSI stands for Pound per Square Inch (Pressure is said to be 1 PSI when 1 pound-force acts on an area of 1 square inch). Tyre pressure is generally measured in PSI.
PSI = pound force / area in inch square
1 PSI = 0.070307 kilogram force per centimeter square
To convert PSI value to kg/cm2 multiply it by 0.070307.
Derivation
1 pound = 0.45359237 kg
1 in2 = 6.4516 cm2 .
Now, 1 PSI = 1 lbf / 1 in2
= (0.45359237 / 6.4516) kg/cm2
1 PSI = 0.070307 kg/cm2
Sample Problems
Question 1: Convert 2.5 PSI to kg/cm2.
Solution:
2.5 PSI = 2.5 × 0.070307 kg/cm2
= 0.1757675 kg/cm2
Question 2: Is 20 PSI same as 15 kg/cm2.
Solution:
20 PSI = 20 × 0.070307 kg/cm2
= 1.40614 kg/cm2
Which is not equal to 15 kg/cm2. So 20 PSI is not same as 15 kg/cm2.
Question 3: If a 4 lb force is acting on a surface of area 2 in2. Find the pressure in kg/cm2.
Solution:
Pressure in PSI = 4/2 PSI
= 2 PSI
(Converting 2 PSI to kg/cm2 )
= 2 × 0.070307 kg/cm2
= 0.140674 kg/cm2 .
Question 4: Force of 2-kilo pounds acts on a surface of area 10 in2. Find the pressure in kg/cm2.
Solution:
Pressure in PSI = 1000/10 PSI
= 100 PSI
(Converting 100 PSI to kg/cm2 )
= 100 × 0.070307 kg/cm2
= 7.0307 kg/cm2 .
Question 5: Convert 1.5 PSI to kg/cm2.
Solution:
1.5 PSI = 1.5 × 0.070307 kg/cm2
= 0.1054605 kg/cm2
Question 6: Write 125 PSI in kg/cm2.
Solution:
125 PSI = 125 × 0.070307 kg/cm2
= 0.8.788375 kg/cm2
