Class 9 RD Sharma Solutions – Chapter 22 Tabular Representation of Statistical Data – Exercise 22.2
Question 1. Define cumulative frequency distribution.
Solution:
The structure showing the distribution of cumulative frequencies over various classes is known as cumulative frequency distribution.
Question 2. Explain the difference between a frequency distribution and a cumulative frequency distribution.
Solution:
The method representing raw data which is easily understandable is called frequency distribution. The structure showing the distribution of cumulative frequencies over various classes is known as cumulative frequency distribution.

Question 5. The water bills (in rupees) of 32 houses in a certain street for the period 1.1.98 to 31.3.98 are given below :
56, 43, 32, 38, 56, 24, 68, 85, 52, 47, 35, 58, 63, 74, 27, 84, 69, 35, 44, 75, 55, 30, 54, 65, 45, 67, 95, 72, 43, 65, 35, 59.
Tabulate the data and present the data as a cumulative frequency table using 70-79 as one of the class intervals.
Solution:
The minimum and maximum bills are Rs 24 and Rs 95 respectively.
Range of the class interval is 95-24 = 71.
Class interval given = 70-79, with the class size being 9.
number of classes = range/class-size = 71/9 = 7.80 which is approximately 8.
Cumulative frequency distribution is as follows :

30, 32, 28, 24, 20, 25, 38, 37, 40, 45, 16, 20, 19, 24, 27, 30, 32, 34, 35, 42, 27, 28, 19, 34, 38, 39, 42, 29, 24, 27, 22, 29, 31, 19, 27, 25, 28, 23, 24, 32, 34, 18, 27, 25, 37, 31, 24, 23, 43, 32, 28, 31, 24, 23, 26, 36, 32, 29, 28, 21.
Prepare a cumulative frequency distribution table using 45-49 as the last class interval.
Solution:
The minimum and maximum book shelves are 16 and 45 respectively.
The range of the book shelves 45-16 = 29
We have the following class interval , 45 – 49, with the class size =4.
Number of classes = Range/Class size = 29/4 = 7.25 , which approximates to 8 nearly.
