American Express had visited the campus for recruitment of CFR/EDA interns in September 2020. The recruitment process included 2 rounds for shortlisting students for interviews i.e one online test and a second presentation round. The online test consisted of sections of finding the output, debugging codes, 2 coding questions, aptitude and verbal, SQL queries, and computer basics. Out of a total of 86, students who appeared in the online test 16 students were shortlisted for the next round that was presented based. During the company presentation, a case study was discussed and the students were shortlisted on the basis of responses given by the students during the discussion. 12 students were shortlisted for the interviews, I was one of them.

All the students had 2 or 3 rounds of interviews. The first round was a complete technical round. In my case, it was 1 hour 15 minutes long. The interviewer discussed everything mentioned in the resume in detail. Prepare your projects thoroughly before appearing for the interview. Apart from the projects questions related to Database Management Systems and SQL were asked. Then later they gave me a puzzle to solve. I could not come up with the exact solution for the puzzle but all they wanted to know was the approach I used. Also, be prepared with what the company does. My interviewer also has a good discussion about the workflow of the credit card systems. This was an elimination round. I had made it through this round.

The next round was a technical plus HR round. Initially, the interviewer discussed a few very basic coding questions one of them from sorting and the second from the linked list. Other than this the interviewer asked me a few puzzles and guesstimates. Make sure to choose the right parameters to solve the guesstimates and discuss your approach clearly with the interviewer. It was about 30 minutes long.

The last round was HR based. It began with an introduction and a general discussion about college. Again the interviewer asked me puzzles and guesstimates. We had a discussion about the company. Not all students had this third round. The company had shortlisted 6 students in total- 5 for CFR and 1 for EDA. I was one of them 🙂

Few tips to succeed in the interviews:

  1. Go through your resume well before the interviews. Know each and everything that you have written down in the resume. Do not try to cheat them.
  2. Prepare guesstimates and puzzles well.
  3. Speak confidently. Discuss your approach loudly with the interviewer rather than struggling quietly in your mind.
  4. Research about the company.
