Project Title : Airport Security Using Beacon Introduction: Airport security refers to the techniques and methods used in an attempt to protect passengers, staff, and planes which use the airports from accidental/malicious harm, crime, and other threats. Aviation security is a combination of human and material resources to safeguard civil aviation against unlawful interference. Unlawful interference could be acts of terrorism, sabotage, a threat to life and property, communication of false threat, etc.
If airport security does succeed then the chances of any dangerous situation, illegal items or threats entering into an aircraft, country or airport are greatly reduced. As such, airport security serves several purposes: To protect the airport and country from any threatening events, to reassure the traveling public that they are safe and to protect the country and their people.
Monte R. Belger of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration notes “The goal of aviation security is to prevent harm to aircraft, passengers, and crew, as well as support national security and counter-terrorism policy.” Conceptual framework: The passengers entering the airport are expected to have an airport app which ensures their secure entry at the airport in the following manner: 1. Bluetooth device (i.e., beacon), available at the entry of the airport, is used to push notification (for sending One Time Password) to all the android devices entering the airport.
2. The user is expected to enter the Aadhaar number on the redirected website and will receive an OTP on that Android device.
3. The information of the logged-in user is retrieved from the Aadhaar database.
4. Then, the user is expected to enter OTP to a machine installed at the airport. Then, he/she is expected to give thumb impression to the biometric system(part of the OTP-accepting machine).
5. If his/her thumb impression matches with that in the Aadhaar database then, only he/she is allowed to enter the airport.
6. The user is not granted the entry permission if his/her identity is verified by the app. In such a case, he/she can also try to validate his/her identity by offline means.
7. In offline means of identity verification(for users not having Aadhaar number or the ones whose online verification has failed), the user is expected to show one of the following proofs of identity:
……..b) Driving License
……..c) PAN card
The user information is verified by the above-mentioned means and he/she is granted permission to get into the airport.
8. For children not having Aadhaar card, their identity is verified by their parents’/guardians’ Aadhaar card.
9. In case, all the above-mentioned means of identity verification fails, the person is not allowed entry into the airport.
Algorithm: 1. Push Notification (which contains an URL) is sent through Beacon.
2. It will redirect to a web app.
3. Enter Aadhaar Number.
4. Aadhaar number will be verified from the Aadhaar database.
5. An OTP will be generated and sent to the user.
6. As the user enters OTP, he has to give a thumb impression (two-step verification). If both thumb impressions i.e., one from database and other of user matches, entry is granted else the entry gates will not open.
Tools Used: Bluetooth low energy beacon
Bluetooth beacons are hardware transmitters – a class of Bluetooth low energy (LE) devices that broadcast their identifier to nearby portable electronic devices. The technology enables smartphones, tablets, and other devices to perform actions when in close proximity to a beacon.
Bluetooth beacons use Bluetooth low energy proximity sensing to transmit a universally unique identifier picked up by a compatible app or operating system. The identifier and several bytes sent with it can be used to determine the device’s physical location, track customers, or trigger a location-based action on the device such as a push notification.
Aadhaar number is a 12-digit random number issued by the UIDAI (“Authority”) to the residents of India after satisfying the verification process laid down by the Authority. Any individual, irrespective of age and gender, who is a resident of India, may voluntarily enroll to obtain Aadhaar number. The person willing to enroll has to provide minimal demographic and biometric information during the enrolment process which is totally free of cost. An individual needs to enroll for Aadhaar only once and after de-duplication, only one Aadhaar shall be generated, as the uniqueness is achieved through the process of demographic and biometric de-duplication. The Aadhaar number is a proof of identity.

A passport is a travel document, usually issued by a country’s government that certifies the identity and nationality of its holder for the purpose of international travel. Standard passports may contain information such as the holder’s name, place, and date of birth, photograph, signature, and other identifying information. Passports are moving towards including biometric information in a microchip embedded in the document, making them machine-readable and difficult to counterfeit. A passport is a document certifying identity and nationality.
In India, the driving license is the official document which authorizes its holder to operate various types of motor vehicle on highways and some other roads to which the public have access. In various Indian states, they are administered by the Regional Transport Authorities/Offices. A driving license is required in India by any person driving a vehicle on any highway or other road defined in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
A modern photo driving license can also serve many of the purposes of an identity card in non-driving contexts (proof of identity or age.
Permanent account number
Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a code that acts as identification for Indian nationals, especially those who pay Income Tax. It is a unique, 10-character alpha-numeric identifier, issued to all judicial entities identifiable under the Indian Income Tax Act, 1961. It is issued by the Indian Income Tax Department under the supervision of the Central Board for Direct Taxes and it also serves as an important proof of identification.
