3D Coat and ZBrush both are advanced modelling and animation software used for creating different styles of animation. They are used by individuals as well as organisations for the commercial production of animation works. They are used in designing assets for games and movies. Both come with robust sculpting features along with texturing and visual effects. It comes packed with enhanced features which allow material sculpting like stone, wood, clay etc. There is always been confusion in choosing software for the work which would be best suited for them so let’s understand the key differences between these softwares.

3d-Coat-vs-ZBrush

3D Coat is an advanced sculpting tool which was built to create digital 3D models and assets. It was developed by Pilgway and its stable version was released in 2021. It can be used on different operating systems like Windows, MacOS, Linux etc. It has a large number of tools which helps in sculpting and UV mapping. texturing, polygon topology editing etc.

Advantages of 3D Coat

  • It used voxel instead of polygons which provides smooth curves and high resolution.
  • It provides a large number of brush tools which helps in precise model designing.
  • Exporting models for 3D printing is easy and straightforward.
  • It is able to create high-resolution models of up to 16k.
  • It is easy to install and configure.

Disadvantages of 3D Coat

  • Baking lighting option is not available means textures cannot be enhanced.
  • It provides a limited number of shading features.
  • Rendering process of 3D models is slow and consumes time.

ZBrush is computer software for digital sculpting and it is an advanced tool which is used in creating high-quality models. Its best feature is that it can combine 2.5 and 3D modelling and texture. Initially, it was released in 1999. It is available for Windows and Mac operating systems.

Advantages of ZBrush

  • It allows sculpting with millions of polygons with very little impact on computer speed.
  • It comes with automatic retopologizing features along with a manual which saves a lot of time.
  • It allows material modelling like textile, stone, clay etc.
  • It allows to paint and UV unwrap models easily.

Disadvantages of ZBrush

  • User interface of ZBrush is difficult to understand.
  • Rendering process is slow.

Following is a table of differences between 3D Coat and ZBrush:

3D Coat

ZBrush

1. It can be understood as a digital sculpting computer software which helps in creating 3D models. It can be understood as an advanced tool designed especially for texturing and sculpting purposes.
2. It was developed by Pilgway. It was developed by Pixologic.
3. It is available for Linux operating system also along with Windows and Mac OS. It is available only for Windows and Mac operating systems only.
4. It was developed in 2017. It was developed in 1999.
5. It supports less number of polygons while creating models. It supports a large number of polygons around 40 million for creating models.
6. It is capable of creating only 3d models. It can create 2.5d and 3d models.
7. External models can be imported and edited in this software. It does not allow editing of external models created on some other software.
8. It is less costly compared to ZBrush. It is expensive software.
